Rory McIlroy Relishes the Freedom to Choose His Own Tournament Schedule

Rory McIlroy says he will “continue to take advantage” of the freedom to choose his own PGA Tour schedule, even if it means missing high-profile signature events in 2025.

Currently ranked second behind world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the FedEx Cup standings, McIlroy heads into the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta looking to close out another strong campaign.

McIlroy Skipped Major Signature Events in 2025

This season, McIlroy opted out of several signature tournaments, including:

1-The Memorial Tournament
2-The Sentry
3-The RBC Heritage
4-The FedEx St. Jude Championship (first playoff event)

Despite missing these high-profile events, the Northern Irish star has maintained an impressive position in the FedEx Cup rankings, showing his ability to balance performance with personal priorities.

Balancing PGA Tour and DP World Tour Commitments

Alongside his PGA Tour schedule, McIlroy will continue to honor his DP World Tour commitments, with appearances planned at the Irish Open, as well as events in India and Australia before the year ends.

Having already completed his career grand slam at the Masters in April, McIlroy is in a unique position to tailor his calendar around both personal and professional goals.

McIlroy on the “Luxury” of Scheduling Freedom

Speaking about his approach, McIlroy explained:

“I’ll always look at the schedule at the start of the year and see what best fits me, my life, and everything else I do with family or other opportunities outside of golf. The luxury of being a PGA Tour player is that we’re free to pick and choose our own schedule for the most part. I took advantage of that this year, and I’ll continue to take advantage of it for as long as I can.”

While McIlroy admits he may skip fewer signature events in 2026, he insists flexibility remains an important part of his career management.

PGA Tour 2026 Schedule: More Signature Events Ahead

Looking ahead, the 2026 PGA Tour schedule will add a ninth signature event:

Miami Championship at Trump National Doral (April 30 – May 3).

This adjustment means that within just seven weeks, players will compete in:

The Masters

The U.S. Open

Three signature events

McIlroy believes the condensed calendar will help build momentum:

“Golf builds through January, February, and March, then gets a huge popularity spike with Augusta. Keeping that momentum through the PGA and U.S. Open is a good thing. It’s a lot of golf in a short period, but at least we’re not traveling halfway around the world.”

Final Thoughts

Rory McIlroy continues to embrace the luxury of control over his schedule, balancing personal life, global commitments, and the demands of the PGA Tour. With more signature events on the horizon, fans can expect to see McIlroy carefully navigate his path to success while maintaining the freedom he values most.
